A Homemade BBQ Baked Beans recipe that is absolutely delicious. Goodbye canned baked beans!
It seems like everyone is eating all kinds of different baked beans during the summer and spring. Baked beans go with just about everything, especially when you are grilling.
These are perfect for Memorial Day coming up! I will be bringing them - yum.
I have always used canned baked beans, but I really want to try to make them completely homemade and from scratch. Homemade anything always tastes better because you know what is going in it and you made it.
I know you guys will love this recipe because they aren't just any kind of baked beans, they are BBQ. I love anything BBQ, don't you? What's your favorite BBQ sauce?
We love Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce. The one..and only! It just has so much flavor!
I am not affiliated with Sweet Baby Ray's - we just love it. Now if you are reading this Sweet Baby Ray's... your sauce is the bomb! It rocks.
These bbq baked beans are perfect because they contain just the right about of bbq sauce, brown sugar, and molasses. Yum. Just thinking about this, makes me want to have a big bowl of baked beans.
There are a couple of different ways to make them - you can do the long and completely from scratch recipe or the shortcut way, which is very easy.
You can either use canned great northern beans or dry ones. If you are using dried beans, you will have to soak them overnight in water and it will take a little more time to cook them.
The ingredient steps will be the same for both ways, but if you using the dried beans and soaking them, you will have to bake them for at least 2 hours or more. You want your beans to be soft and delicious - not hard and crunchy.
Another thing you may want to do different as well is with the bacon. You can chop up the uncooked bacon and place it into the beans while you they are baking or you can cook the bacon and then add it into the beans. Either way is delicious - just depends on how you would like to do it.
- Shortcut Ingredients:
- 32 ounces 2 cans Great Northern Beans
- ½ cup BBQ Sauce*
- 1 small onion diced
- ⅓ cup molasses
- ¼ cup brown sugar lightly packed
- 6 pieces of bacon**
- Long-way Ingredients:
- 1 pound bag Great Northern Beans
- 6 cups water
- ½ cup BBQ Sauce*
- 1 small onion diced
- ⅓ cup molasses
- ¼ cup brown sugar lightly packed
- 6 pieces of bacon**
-
Shortcut - Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix together the BBQ sauce, molasses, and brown sugar. Set aside.
-
In a large dutch oven or something similar, add in the canned beans, bacon, onion, and the sauce you just mixed together.
-
Bake for 1 hour. Serve and enjoy!
-
Longway - You will want to soak the beans in the 6 cups of water overnight. You will then reserve half of the liquid and set it aside.
-
Preheat oven to 300 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix together the BBQ sauce, molasses, and brown sugar. Set aside.
-
In a large dutch oven or something similar, add in the canned beans, bacon, onion, and the sauce you just mixed together.
-
Add in 1 cup of the reserved liquid. Bake for 1 hour. Test how soft the beans are - if not tender and soft bake for another hour. If you see that the beans are drying out, add more reserved liquid. I baked mine for a total of 3 hours.
*I used Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce.
**You can either add in the bacon uncooked, or you can cook it. It depends on your personal preference.

That bowl looks so warm and comforting! I love making classics like baked beans from scratch, it's a great way to avoid all the additives in the storebought kinds and they taste better too. 🙂

This recipe for baked beans sounds so easy and delicious. Sweet Baby Ray BBQ sauce is a great BBQ sauce and sounds like an excellent choice in this recipe but I am going to try my own homemade Bourbon BBQ sauce that has been a big hit around my house! I am looking forward to trying this recipe for Memorial Day! Thank you for sharing!

made these this evening and they are delicious I used one northern bean and one trip bean. they were very saucy(whites delicious). but my question to you is should the beans be drained? rinsed and drained or made with the liquid from the cans/
would love to make them again and wanted your input. I did drain but not thoroughly and did not rinse
