Have you gone to the grocery store and looked at the prices of almond milk lately? Wow. It is more expensive than conventional dairy milk!!
At my local Walmart (where it is currently the cheapest) is $2.38 for a ½ gallon of Silk Almond Milk. Do the math and that is $4.76 for a gallon!
Way too expensive in my mind.
At my local bulk store, BJ'S, I can buy 3 lbs of raw almonds for $12.99. Yes, that is a very good price. Wanna know why? You can make almond milk and almond flour at the most affordable price! That totally rocks my socks, does it rock yours?
For the entire bag of almonds it says it is 9 ½ cups. Each cup of almonds is only $1.37 - not too shabby, right? It gets better, trust me.
With ONE CUP of almonds I can make a gallon of almond milk and have leftover pulp to make almond flour!!! I love to save money, but this one just gets me too excited! I am saving a boatload of moolah! For each gallon, I am saving $3.39! Oh yeah. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Saving money is so exciting. Lets get down to business and give you that recipe!
To get the most benefits of your almonds you will want to soak them for a good 24 hours. When you soak your almonds they are easier to digest and it activates their enzymes.
After soaking your almonds overnight, drain all water and get ready to make your almond milk.
Just an FYI, I like to do small batches with my almonds and water because my blender isn't that big and is on the cheaper side.
Equipment Needed
- 1 colander
- 1 blender
- 1 pretty big bowl to catch the almond milk
- cheesecloth, to strain the pulp from the milk
Ingredients
- 1 cup of soaked almonds
- 1 gallon of filtered water
Directions
- Throw some of your almonds into a blender (doesn't have to be a high end blender, mine sure isn't) with some water and process until you see almond milk.
- While using a colander on top of your big bowl and lined with cheesecloth, carefully pour the almond milk from the blender and let it strain. The nutty stuff you have leftover is called "pulp".
- After draining, remove the pulp from the cheesecloth and put back into the blender and repeat step 1.
- After you have taken all of the milk from the pulp, dump the pulp into a container in which you can freeze to make almond flour. {that will be another post soon}
- Repeat all steps until your gallon of water is all gone.
- Now just add the almond milk from the big bowl to the gallon jug.
- Enjoy the savings of homemade almond milk!
The stuff you see in the picture above this sentence is the pulp. The process is so quick and easy! It took me a total of 5 minutes to make one gallon of this stuff!
Life is good. Real good.
Have you ever tried making homemade almond milk before?

I have made almond milk before - I prefer to drink it when we don't have farm fresh milk. My yield was not as high as yours, but I do think it was a savings over storebought. I thought the almond meal was good in muffins. 🙂

Thank you for stopping by! Farm fresh milk is so good, but so hard to come by in the city.

We go through a good amount of almond milk - although I have to get better with making my own. Thanks for inspiring me to get on the ball. Another benefit to making your own is that you don't have to worry about that nasty carrageenan that they add to the store bought brands (we use whole foods brand which is one of the only ones i've found without it added). Followed you from the Homestead Barn Hop.
Love for you to come by Wildcrafting Wednesday and share.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Very recently I have learned about that carrageenan junk, and discovered that every brand of organic almond or coconut milk I own has that stuff in it. So here I was, off to look for a recipe and there you were giving it to me, straight and simple. I like that 🙂

Wow! Thank you for this! May I ask what can I use the almond meal for? Thank you in advance!

Thank you, Chelsea! I was looking for a fast, easy and budget-friendly alternative to store-bought almond milk with all of the nasty fillers... I can't wait for my husband and I to give this a try! I look forward to checking out the rest of your site for more tips!
